Wendy's story

My life's been like a rollercoaster. I've gone from not wanting to speak to anybody to doing everything, including things I didn't do when I had my sight. Now I'm a skier, and I'd never been skiing before in my life!

Wendy Kane was a medic in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

She trained in Aldershot and was posted to Salisbury and then Knightsbridge. After leaving the Army in 1972, she went into nursing and worked as a practice manager. She started a family, and then started her own business in aromatherapy and sports massage.

Wendy lost her sight in 1997, after a stroke of the optic nerve. She left her job and moved into the countryside and, not long after, her other eye deteriorated. Her social worker suggested Blind Veterans UK, and she got in touch.

As well as the everyday skills she's learnt from us, Wendy has really enjoyed the fellowship of being a member - meeting veterans of all ages and forging a common bond. She's been on outdoor pursuits trips, rock climbing and abseiling. She's learned reflexology and sports therapy, and is looking forward to learning hypnotherapy
