History
The centre was built in 1864 by John Cowlishaw. The building was initially a private house, then in the 1920's it was turned into a hostel for students at the university. Since the 1950's it has been used as a Royal Infirmary, nursing sisters home, private nursing home and a nursing clinic.
Blind Veterans UK took over in 2005 to give our members a training centre in the north to help those who did not want to take the journey down to Brighton.

Our centres
We have three centres in England and Wales; on the South Coast, in the North of England and in North Wales.
Each centre is a place for recreation, training and rehabilitation for blind veterans and their families. We provide professional support, care and training to help our members enjoy life beyond sight loss, starting by helping people understand the implications of their vision impairment.
