In Memory of Captain Stephen Healey

Captain Stephen Healey
Captain Stephen Healey

Captain Stephen Healey from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, died in action in Afghanistan on Saturday 26 May 2012. Captain Healey commanded the Combined Force Burma reconnaissance platoon and, whilst on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province, his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.

Captain Healey was a very active supporter of Blind Veterans UK and donations can be made to our charity in his memory at www.justgiving.com/captainstephenhealey.

Stephen Healey and Thea Davies-smallApart from being an extremely popular and capable commander in the Army, Captain Healey was an active supporter for Blind Veterans UK. To raise funds for our charity he and other soldiers from 1st Royal Welsh recently walked blindfolded from Chester to Llandudno. Llandudno being home to one of our three centres for the rehabilitation and respite of blind ex-Service men and women.

We are honoured by Stephen's support and would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Captain Healey's family and friends at this time. Stephen's girlfriend Thea Davies has set up a JustGiving page in his memory in aid of Blind Veterans UK. The overwhelming support this memorial has already received is a testament to the high regard in which he was held.

As Thea says, "Unfortunately we cannot bring him back so if we can get something positive out of this tragedy then I will and that's why I set up the page. Steve supported Blind Veterans UK and so I thought it was only right to continue supporting such a fantastic cause."

While Thea would be forgiven for immersing herself in grief, she has instead chosen to honour Captain Healey's memory by undertaking a 415 mile, year-long running challenge to raise funds for his favourite charity - Blind Veterans UK.

Thea started the challenge with the London Parks Half Marathon on the 7 October 2012 and will end with the Chester Marathon on the 6 October 2013, which she and Stephen completed in 2011. Thea chose the figure of 415 miles as Captain Healey was the 415th fallen soldier.
