BFBS Salisbury plain studio opens and connects local forces families with Afghanistan.

While troops with 1st Mechanized Brigade begin Op Herrick 18, their families can now hear more live coverage from theatre via the new BFBS Salisbury Plain studio.

Colonel Paddy Tabor, Garrison Commander for Tidworth, Bulford and Netheravon, cut the ribbon and thanked his hosts, BFBS Salisbury Plain Presenter Chris Sturgess and Reporter Shirley Swain.

"The service they provide is an absolute cornerstone of what the garrison is all about," he said. "The garrison is going to grow by about a quarter and more members of the British Army and their families are going to come here. BFBS Salisbury Plain is going to be a key part of their lives in informing them and bringing them together as a community."

The revamped studio in Building 257 on Marlborough Road has fresh BFBS signage and an updated interior. The modern studio has the latest compact digital radio desk and a Myriad playout system, so presenters have quick access to the full music library, information services and interviews on the BFBS Radio network.

BFBS Salisbury Plain broadcasts live on 106.8 FM and is the first of six new local BFBS UK stations to be officially opened. Chris Sturgess now wakes up the local Forces community with music and chat on the Salisbury Plain Breakfast Show from 0630 until 10am.

"It was so nice to have so many people from both the military and civilian communities to make our grand opening extra special," he said. "So much hard work has gone into transforming the studios and it was great that we could show everyone who we are, where we are and more importantly the future service we'll be providing.

"BFBS looks forward to giving the people here a live and local service mixed with live programming from Afghanistan and all corners of the globe."

News bulletins from around the world are broadcast via British Forces News and BFBS Reporter Shirley Swain covers the military stories in the region for BFBS Radio and TV.

BFBS Salisbury Plain also links to programmes from across the station's network, such as the 'Total Ops Connection' - live from Afghanistan 10am - 1pm every weekday - and 'Access All Areas', the slot for live dedications and messages, on air 10am - 1pm every Sunday.
