Blind Veterans UK is urging all locals to sign its recently launched an e-petition to rename the St Dunstan's Roundabout in Ovingdean, Brighton to the Blind Veterans UK roundabout in honour of the charity's official name change from St Dunstan's to Blind Veterans UK last year.
The roundabout has a key location by the charity's rehabilitation and training centre in Ovingdean, Brighton, which celebrates its 75th anniversary later this year. For years it has been known by Brighton locals, staff members at the centre and the blind veterans themselves as the St Dunstan's roundabout, but the charity feels that the renaming of the roundabout will be yet another important milestone in the transition from St Dunstan's to Blind Veterans UK.
Lesley Garven, Centre Manager at Blind Veterans UK, which provides support to blind veterans regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight, said: "The re-brand from St Dunstan's to Blind Veterans UK last February 2012 was extremely successful - by our name people are now able to understand exactly who it is that we are here to support. What we still need to do is make sure that this new name is spread far and wide, particularly in the Brighton area where we have the oldest of our three rehabilitation training centres for blind veterans. Getting the local community to help us rename the roundabout will be great way of doing this."
Launched by Blind Veterans UK to the Brighton and Hove City Council, the e-petition has received mounting support but the charity still needs as many signatures as possible before it is presented to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee meeting on the 9th July 2013.
