Blind Veterans UK reaches out to carers during Carers Week

Blind Veterans UK are supporting Carers Week for the first time this year.
The 9th of June marks the beginning of Carers Week, the week-long national campaign to celebrate and recognise the UK's 6.5 million 'hidden' carers.
Blind Veterans UK is supporting the week to recognise the enormous contribution that carers and family members make to the charity's veterans and to reach out to the thousands of carers and blind veterans who could be eligible for the charity's support.
The charity supports over 5,000 veterans, carers and family members, providing vital practical and emotional support and services to help the whole family to adjust to life with sight loss.
Carer Maureen Baron has recently spoken out about the support her and her blind veteran husband Don have received from Blind Veterans UK.
Maureen Baron says: "When we got in touch with Blind Veterans UK in 2010, everything changed. Our welfare officer came to see us at home and it was amazing that as well as talking to Don, she listened to me, too, and also wanted to know how they could help me.
"Blind Veterans UK has been brilliant, they've not only given Don his independence back, by teaching him skills and giving him equipment to adjust to life with sight loss, but they have also helped me to regain some of my independence as well."
It is estimated that there are currently over 68,000 veterans with vision impairment who could be eligible for the charity's support, and many of them will have carers who could also benefit. Throughout the week, volunteers and staff from the charity will be attending events around the UK to reach out to these.
The events the charity will be attending are:
- Monday 9 June - Information fair at Bonn Square, Oxford
- Tuesday 10 June - Information fair at Sir Nigel Gresley Square, Doncaster
- Tuesday 10 June - Information fair at St George's Hall, Liverpool
- Wednesday 11 June - Information fair at Copthorne Hotel, Cardiff
- Thursday 12 June - Information fair at The Brighton Hotel, Brighton
- Friday 13 June - Information fair at St Paul's Centre, Hammersmith
