Coleford former soldier to tackle 100 mile cycle ride for Blind Veterans UK

A soldier of nine and a half years from Coleford is gearing up to tackle a 100 mile cycle ride in aid of Blind Veterans UK.
Brett Parker, 41 and the Estate Manager for the retailer Paperchase, decided to take part in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 for Blind Veterans UK after hearing about the support we have given to the father of a colleague who suffers from sight loss.
Brett says: "A colleague's father has been helped a great deal by Blind Veterans UK since he was shot and blinded in both eyes whilst serving in Kenya in 1953. For this reason, it feels right to be raising money in aid of it.
"I also come from a strong military family - I served in the Army, my Grandfather and Uncle served in the Royal Air Force and my brother is currently serving with the Royal Signals - so it makes a lot of sense that I would want to do something worthwhile for a charity that supports veterans."
A keen long distance runner who has tackled assault courses and enjoys diving, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 will be the first major bike ride Brett has attempted.
The cycle ride follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through London into stunning Surrey countryside.
Brett says: "I have to say I am very nervous about taking part in RideLondon. Having said that, last year I completed a 55 mile Thames Bridges Ride on a borrowed mountain bike having done no training, which I'm hoping is an indication that I might be able to cope with RideLondon OK!
"Training is going OK, I'm just trying to build up my stamina, and fundraising is going very well - I'm always amazed by people's generosity. I'm not the best at asking for money but this was such a good cause that I felt it was worth the effort."
Brett is also taking part in Blind Veterans UK's 100k London to Brighton walk which takes place over the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June 2014.
