North Wales residents are invited to meet an inspirational local blind ex-soldier and current Guinness world record-holder speak about coming to terms with sight loss.
Tickets are now on sale for 'Life Beyond Sight Loss', a drinks reception and audience with local blind veteran Billy Baxter, 7:30pm Thursday 8th May at our Llandudno Centre.
A former Royal Artillery staff sergeant, Billy lost his sight in 1997 after contracting a virus in Bosnia. Billy, who was tasked with finding evidence of war crimes, contracted the virus while he and his colleagues were exhuming a mass grave in the war-torn country.
One of our most famous veterans, Billy will share his personal story of how he overcame his own battle with sight loss with support from the charity. Since joining in 2000, he has ridden in a motorbike stunt team, appeared onTop Gear, taken a National Diploma Performing Arts course and broken the world record for fastest blind motorcyclist.
Billy now works at the Blind Veterans UK's Llandudno centre to help other veterans with sight loss regain their independence.
Victoria Beech, Regional Fundraiser said: "Billy Baxter is a shining example of much can be achieved by our veterans with the right support and he's set to give an unmissable talk about his experiences.
"This event, part of our Blind Veterans UK Awareness week, aims to give members of the community the opportunity to find out more about our centre in Llandudno, the work we do to help ex-Service personnel and how they can get involved with the work that we do."
Those attending the event will be able to take part in an interactive experience which simulates different types of sight loss. Following the talk, audience members will also have an opportunity to visit some of the training facilities in the centre and try some of the gadgets that assist those with visual impairments to be independent in their own homes.
The event marks the middle of Blind Veterans UK Awareness Week, Sunday 4th - Saturday 10th May. During the week, an awareness stand will provide information at numerous local supermarkets and bank holiday events across north Wales.
