Local Norwich Detectors club hold latest metal detecting rally and raise hundreds of pounds for Blind Veterans UK.
On Sunday 23rd February 2014 Norwich Detectors held the latest in its metal detecting rallies in support of Blind Veterans UK. Chairperson of Norwich Detectors Graeme Simmonds speaks about their recent fundraising activities.
We have been proud to support Blind Veterans UK in the past and our members were very willing to step up once again to raise more funds for such a worthwhile cause.
We returned to an area where we have held previous rallies and that has been productive in terms of finds. Our hopes were high that we would have another successful day and it certainly proved to be so. The weather was blustery but fine, and forty detectorists attended, comprising our members and some from two neighbouring detecting cl ubs.
A good range of finds were unearthed including 14 Medieval hammered coins, 2 Roman coins and a lovely Iron Age silver coin dating from c. 50BC to 50AD. The find of the day was an extremely rare Bronze Age socketed hammer, dating from between 2400BC and 800BC. This was a truly spectacular way of crowning what was another very successful and enjoyable day.
The event raised £645 which, with Gift Aid contributions, will result in a very healthy donation to Blind Veterans UK. We are very pleased to have assisted again in this way. It was a great day out and for a great cause. Well done to the organisers and everyone who took part.
