Response to media coverage of pioneering treatment for macular degeneration

While Blind Veterans UK welcomes all medical developments that could potentially help our beneficiaries and other people with sight loss, we would advise people to treat the recent press coverage on the Daily Express and Daily Mail websites on trials and treatments of eye surgery for macular degeneration with a degree of caution.

Macular degeneration is a very complex condition and presents itself in different ways. There are many variables that could affect the success, or otherwise, of implants being done.

We would encourage anyone considering taking part in any trials or treatment to ensure they fully understand how they could affect their specific condition, particularly in light of the fact treatments like this can be very expensive with uncertain outcomes.

We have made a request for more information on the clinical and scientific data relating to the implants.
