Planning your event

Taking some time to plan your event will make a big difference.

Think about what will get you and your friends and family excited. Where and when should your event take place? Can you get anyone to help you? How can you raise as much money as possible?

If you need a little inspiration take a look at our favourite fundraising ideas. You could organise your own #MeetUpBrewUp, #BigFryUp or organise a #24Unplugged challenge weekend for you and your family. Promoting your fundraising event

Now you know what you’re up to it’s time to spread the word far and wide.

Social media is a free and effective way to let everyone know what you’re doing. Set up a page for your event on Facebook and share regular updates. Share widely on Twitter, Instagram and other social networks too – and don’t forget email and text messages either!

Get in touch with your local papers and radio stations and tell them about your event. Local media are often keen to promote good news stories and will get you great publicity and even more supporters. Collecting donations

Setting up a fundraising page on JustGivingVirgin Money Giving or Facebook is hands down the most effective way to get people to donate. And make sure you set a fundraising target – pages with targets receive 40% more donations.

How to get the most out of your fundraising page

Make sure you download our sponsorship form and ask anyone who donates offline or on the day to complete it. This ensures we can claim Gift Aid on eligible donations, which means we’ll receive an extra 25p for every £1 donated.

Keeping it legal

Before your event takes place it’s worth making sure everything is safe and legal. For example, if you’re holding a raffle or a collection you may need a licence or if you’re selling food or alcohol you may need a hygiene certificate.

Paying in your money

Once your event is over, it’s time to give yourself an enormous pat on the back – you’ve just done something amazing for veterans battling with sight loss. But it doesn’t stop there. With an average of 20% of donations received after an event it’s really worth sharing pics and info about your event and encouraging late donations.

When you’re sure all your donations are in you can send the money to us online or via cheque or bank transfer.
