Nancy boils an egg
Meet blind veteran Nancy Bowstead
At 97 years old, Nancy Bowstead is a great example of rebuilding a life after sight loss. A member since 2012 and a permanent resident at the Brighton facility since 2018, Nancy has tried her hand at many different projects, including her popular ‘Nancy’s Knits’, a collection of gorgeous knitwear currently on sale at the Art & Craft Gift Shop.
Nancy served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) in 1942 and was selected for the Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) later being commissioned in 1943. She was married in 1948 and has one son and one daughter. Prior to losing her sight, Nancy was a keen and talented craftswoman, particularly with needlework. She had in her earlier life qualified as a cook – as you can tell from the video!
Nancy was diagnosed with Ocular Ischemia and glaucoma, but it hasn’t stopped this intrepid lady. Having been sadly widowed before she came to live at Blind Veterans UK Brighton, Nancy once again found love with a fellow member. They received a blessing in the Blind Veterans chapel in 2019 and have been together ever since.
Liked the video? Nancy has also done a tutorial on how to make delicious scrambled eggs! The video will be released on 22nd July.
