Meet blind veteran Simon Mahoney
Simon entered the Royal Marines as a Young Officer or Piglet. He was a social worker and social work manager for around 25 years and has picked up business and psychology degrees and a Masters in social work as well as a teaching certificate. After the 20 years, Simon wanted a change so became an artist and part-time teacher, followed by a fork lift driver and Union Rep.
Simon started to lose his sight in 2013 and was totally blind by 2018. He spent a lot of time writing. Fortunately Simon joined Blind Veterans UK and we gave him his life back. His wife died suddenly so he had to learn to cook very quickly. He wrote the book 'First Catch Your Rabbit' to help others in the same situation. One other book published by Simon is 'Descent into Darkness', a narrative of his sight loss, what he found out along the way and how he dealt with it. He has also written a variety of articles about disability in general (as well as sight loss) to support others in his situation.
