Art & Craft

Our Art and Craft department gives veterans an outlet for their creativity. Whether it's a skill someone thinks they may have lost or something they've never tried before, we help our blind veterans develop their creativity.

Some activities our veterans can enjoy are:
• Painting
• Drawing
• Ceramics
• Mosaics
• Woodturning
• Sculpture
• Photography

These skills really help blind veterans to build their sense of independence and job satisfaction, and may even provide a little extra income. The work of our art and craft department in Brighton was featured on BBC Online in May 2011.

Sheffield photography holiday
We recently ran a photography holiday at our Sheffield training centre.

Photography may be a challenge for visually-impaired people, but it is not impossible. Our veterans discovered how blind photographers can enjoy photography, despite the obvious challenges.

It's about more than the camera - we looked at ways of capturing shots, getting to the right place to take them and how to review work.

Exhibition at the Grange

Our Brighton centre art and craft workshop held a successful exhibition at The Grange in Rottingdean in November 2011. Their curator invited us after seeing our work at the Artist Open Houses event last December.

It was a great chance to show the wonderful art we produce to a wider audience, and also raise the Blind Veterans UK profile. We've had fantastic feedback and have been asked to show again next year.

"Brilliant exhibition - inspiring and very diverse. Well done, the standard is so high"
