We answer some of the common questions that you may have about volunteering for Blind Veterans UK.
Will it cost me to volunteer?
No. We don't want our volunteers to be left out of pocket, so we reimburse all agreed expenses (as long as we can see receipts).
Will volunteering affect my benefits?
No, it won't. This is because we don't pay volunteers for their time, only to reimburse their expenses.
Job Seekers' Allowance (JSA): you can volunteer as long as you're still available for work and are actively looking for paid employment.
Income support and disability living allowance: anyone receiving these benefits can volunteer.
Incapacity benefit: the rule that you can only volunteer for 16 hours a week has been scrapped: now volunteering doesn't affect your 'permitted work'.
What does a police background check involve?
If you'll be working with vulnerable adults, you'll have to go through a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in England and Wales or a disclosure check in Scotland.
It's a way of checking that you don't have any criminal convictions that could stop you from working with vulnerable adults. We'll pay for the checks, and they should not take too long. If you want to discuss the checks with us, just email us at email@example.com
Do you have a minimum age for volunteers?
No we don't - we really welcome young people as volunteers.
If someone is under 18 then we'll make sure they're working with an adult. And if they're below 16 there are a certain roles that they won't be able to take on. We'll also make sure we have their parents' or guardians' consent.
