Blind Veterans UK are looking for a patient and positive volunteer to visit our veteran in Basingstoke who served as an air wireless engineer in the Women's Royal Air Force. Prior to losing her sight, she had a passion for handicrafts; nowadays, she enjoys listening to audio books and the radio. Although she is very independent and comfortable in her own company, she would like a volunteer to visit her at home to help her sort her paperwork and read letters. She would also enjoy going for walks in her local area when the weather is warm.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication could make the world of difference to her day to day life.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
