- Cherry Hinton, Cambridge
We are looking for a friendly volunteer to visit our Army veteran and his wife in Cherry Hinton. Having joined the Northamptonshire Regiment in 1949, he served as a Infantryman in Austria and northern Italy, before transferring to the Royal Engineers. Before losing his sight he enjoyed bird-watching and long walks. Now in his 80s, he spends his time listening to music, and particularly like military and brass bands. He lives with his wife but has little other family, so they are both lonely and would benefit hugely from a friendly face who could pop by once a week and have a chat.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
