Home Visitor: Northampton
- A few hours weekly
With a long family history in the military, our veteran was destined to join the RAF and is full of interesting tales of his service! He then went on to a very different second career as a chef & hotelier, spending time in Italy, San Francisco, New Zealand and Fiji. Before losing his sight, we was very interested in rifle-shooting, golf and rowing, but now spends his time listening to audio books and war movies. He also enjoys classical music and history. He would benefit hugely from a friendly volunteer who could visit him in his home and provide company and conversation; this would also provide some much needed respite for his wife who is his main carer.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
