Home Visitor: Slough
- A few hours weekly
We are looking for a friendly volunteer to visit one of our younger veterans in Slough. Having joined the Royal Navy and trained as an Air Engineering Mechanic, he spent most of his service life on board HMS Ark Royal. He then returned to the UK to work with computers, but is currently on long term sick leave. He is a very enthusiastic reader and is currently studying for a classics degree with the Open University. He loves talking about sport, history and the military. He spends a lot of time alone at home in the week whilst his wife works, so would benefit hugely from a patient volunteer who could provide some company and get him out and about in the local area.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
