Our Wheatley based blind veteran would love a friendly volunteer who could visit her in her home to provide company. Having moved in India as a teenager, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps when WWII broke out and was put in charge of the cipher office. Before losing her sight she enjoyed sculpture and upholstery. Now in her mid-90s, she lives alone and often feels lonely so would very much benefit from your companionship. She would also be grateful if the volunteer could assist her with opening post and filling out forms, tasks that have become more difficult with her sight loss.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
