Our RAF veteran is keen to have a friendly volunteer who can take him out. Now in his late 80’s, he was a trained Carpenter and Joiner. Registered ‘partially sighted’, he manages to get around by using a walking frame. He loved reading but now has difficultly to read even with a magnifier. Unable to go out alone, he occasionally gets help from a neighbour to do his shopping. Getting support from a volunteer would really help to get out and about.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
