Outings Buddy: Staines, Middlesex
- A few hours weekly
- Staines, Middlesex
We are looking for a friendly volunteer to take our veteran our for walks or to the pub in Staines. Called up to National Service in 1951, he joined the Royal Signals and was posted to Hamburg and Egypt. After his discharge, he returned to the UK and worked in a number of roles, including being a HGV driver, a chauffeur and a gardener. Before losing his sight he enjoyed golf, swimming and following Chelsea FC! Now in his mid-80s, he enjoys walking and playing bowls. With limited friends and family in the area, he feels lonely, and would benefit hugely from a kind volunteer to spend time with.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
