Outings Companion: Bognor Regis, West Sussex
- A few hours weekly
- Bognor Regis, West Sussex
Having joined the RAF in 1942 aged 19, our veteran served as a Bomb Aimer in Europe. After the war ended, he was then posted in Burma, flying in Dakotas until his discharge. Upon returning to the UK, he became Head Teacher in a school for Vietnamese immigrants. Now in his mid-90s, our veteran is a very positive and organised man, and is very keen on indoor bowls. Staying independent is still very important to him; however, recently he has had some falls over unexpected items when walking in his local area. He would benefit hugely from a patient volunteer who could assist him in walking to the shops safely.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
