Trips companion: Greenwich, London
- A few hours weekly
- Greenwich, London
We are looking for a volunteer who drives to take out our Greenwich-based veteran and his guide dog, Shelley. Having joined the Royal Navy at only 15, he was drafted to HMS Indefatigable. He served all over the world, including the Mediterranean, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Arctic waters and witnessed the A-bomb on Christmas Island. Before losing his sight, he enjoyed sea fishing, photography and computer work. Now widowed and in his 80s, he lives alone in Greenwich and would love to get out the house and explore new places.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day to day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
