Children’s book proceeds being donated to our charity

Published on 23 Jan 2025

Three-legged rescue dog Jake has inspired a children’s book which is set to raise money for three charities including our blind veterans.

‘Jake goes to the Pawlympics’ follows the adventures of Jake the dog, who is encouraged by a one-legged crow to follow his dreams to race at the ‘Pawlympics’.

The illustrated came out on 28 January. It is written by author Jackie Brown who based it on her own dog, Jake, who she rescued while working for NATO in Kosovo.

Along with our charity, sales of the book will also support BLESMA and an animal charity. Jackie says:

“I have a friend who was in the SAS and lost his sight while sailing the world. He was introduced to Blind Veterans UK and with their support began to paint."
"The veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK encompass the message in my book that anything is possible if you believe in yourself."

It was while Jackie was stationed in Kosovo working with NATO that she found Jake, her three-legged street dog, and became involved with rescuing many other street dogs. She says:

“Jake was brought into the Army camp where I was working with a leg hanging off and a foot missing. I fell in love with his brown eyes and couldn’t see him go back on the street. Jake is now 14 and has been with me for 11 years.”

Jackie has since helped to rescue numerous abandoned dogs and cats. She says:

“I have previously organised a charity fundraiser in which we auctioned my friend’s paintings, he had also served in Kosovo post-war. We raised funds jointly for Blind Veterans UK and street dogs which was the beginning of my fundraising activities.
“Writing Jake's true story as a fundraiser came next although I then wrote this fictional story, ‘Jake goes to the Pawlympics’, and am publishing this children’s book first. Behind my efforts is a vision to train street pups into guide dogs for the blind.
“In the future I also plan to support Blind Veterans UK by volunteering as a home visitor.”
