Celebration in North East honours blind veterans and volunteers

Published on 6 Oct 2025

On Friday 26 September, HMS Calliope hosted our military dinner, bringing together Members, volunteers, and some of our wonderful community teams.

The afternoon began with a performance from The Darling Dollies, a vintage vocal trio based in the north east specialising in hits from the 40s, 50s and 60s. This was followed by a three-course meal and the presentation of awards. It was a chance to come together, share stories and celebrate the achievements of blind veterans and the dedication of volunteers and carers.

Among the attendees were four Second World War veterans: Dennis, Kenneth, Arthur, and June.

Our award winners

Two guests were surprised with presentations of Founders Awards during the evening.

Brian

Member Brian received the Camaraderie Award for being an ambassador for our charity - always a helping hand, whether welcoming fellow veterans to the centre, supporting fundraising events, or offering peer-to-peer support.

Janice

The Volunteer Award was especially poignant. Blind veteran Vivian nominated Janice, a volunteer who noticed Vivian was unwell and insisted on taking her to the doctor. That decision led to an early cancer diagnosis and treatment. Vivian credits Janice with saving her life.

The day ended with a toast from our President, Colin Williamson, and closing words from Claire Rowcliffe, Director of Engagement. She also presented an original painting from our veteran Bryan to HMS Calliope Lt Cdr Matt Hulse for their hospitality.

Gatherings like this are a reminder of how important it is for our Members to come together - to celebrate achievements, share experiences and feel part of a community.

It was also a chance to show our appreciation. Every Member, volunteer and carer reflects the strength of our community in the North East of England.
