How to set up an online fundraising page

Setting up an online fundraising page with platforms like JustGiving make it easier for your family and friends to donate - no matter where they are in the world.

Details vary from site to site, but generally you will have to:

  • Create an account by giving some basic details such as your name and email address, or log in if you already have an account.
  • Describe your event and create your page:
    • Explain what you are doing, when you are doing it, and why you are doing it.
    • Make your story personal and include photos to engage people and attract more donations. For example, tell readers if you are fundraising in memory of someone, or in honour of a family member or friend who is supported by Blind Veterans UK.
    • Explain the vital work that Blind Veterans UK do and why it matters to you.
    • Set a target to create momentum - friends and family will love to know their donation is helping you reach (or exceed!) your goal.
  • Choose Blind Veterans UK as the charity you are raising money for.

JustGiving is used by many of our supporters and recommended by our fundraising team:

  • Widely recognised: Established in 2000, JustGiving has become one of the most widely recognised platforms meaning your supporters will feel comfortable and trust the process of making a donation.
  • Easy to use: The platform's step by step instructions make it super-easy to set up your page. The page layout and built in buttons make it easy to keep your donors up to date, share news of your fundraising on social media and connect to Strava to share your progress with training for challenges.
  • Choose the end date for your page: JustGiving automatically assigns a date for your fundraising page to stop taking donations - 3 months from the date of your event or 6 months after the date you create your page. JustGiving allows you to make your page available for as long as you wish to promote it. Simply go to 'Page Settings'. We will confirm and congratulate you on your final fundraising total once your page has closed.

Reasons to set up a fundraising page

Celebrations Whether you’re marking a milestone birthday or anniversary, getting married or retiring, ask your family and friends to make a donation to us instead of giving gifts.
In memory Fundraising in memory of a loved one is a great way to support vision-impaired veterans and pay tribute to someone you've lost.
Sponsorship Take on a challenge to test your limits, or just organise a fun event, and ask your friends and family to sponsor you to help blind veterans across the UK.

Making the most of your online fundraising page.

  • Generate a QR code:  This will enable you to include an easy scannable link to your page, making giving on the go easy. JustGiving have advice on how to create a QR code .
  • Share links to your page on social media: Don't forget to include your link in posts about your fundraising progress or whenever you share content from our accounts.
  • Add a link in your email signature:  Don't forget to get permission from your line manager.
  • Update your page with your fundraising journey:  Share news of how your planning is going, prizes and venue secured, training, injuries (sympathy is a great source of sponsorship!) and personal bests etc.
Did you know? You can also create fundraisers on Facebook, where there is no cost to you or the charity, so 100% of the donations received go to a worthy cause.
