Have you ever served in the British Armed Forces, or are you currently serving as a Regular or Reserve?

We're looking for veterans and service personnel to join our Military Sight Loss Champions scheme and make a real difference to the lives of vision-impaired veterans.

Could you be our champion?

What's a champion?

That depends on you. A 'champion' could be an individual, division, squadron, regiment or an entire establishment. It all depends on how you want to get involved and support us.

What do they do?

Champions can support vision-impaired veterans in a number of ways. From keeping us informed about local military events or hosting our formal dinners, to advocating for eye health in the workplace or fundraising on our behalf.

Who can be one?

Anyone who has served or continues to serve in the UK Armed Forces. You may have experience of sight loss through family or simply want to help vision-impaired veterans get more out of life. Whatever your story, we'd love to hear from you.

How to get involved

There are three ways for champions to support us: volunteering, educating others, and fundraising.

Volunteering

If you have an understanding of service life and the camaraderie that makes it so special, you already possess the unique skills that we need. As a volunteer, you'll meet blind veterans with extraordinary tales to tell, learn about their sight loss challenges and help them live their lives to the full.

Educating others

One in five people will suffer some degree of sight loss in their lifetime. As our champion, you can choose to promote eye health and even help your own colleagues to look after their sight. We have downloadable resources to help you, and you can also book our inspirational speakers to support your workplace events.

Fundraising

Would you like to build teamwork, boost morale and demonstrate the core values of the Armed Forces? As a champion fundraiser, why not take on a challenge such as 'Do it for veterans' or try something of your own? Whatever you do, you'll be helping to provide the support, rehabilitation and equipment our veterans need.

How much time do champions give?

Your commitment to us

We know life can be demanding, so as a Champion your level of support is completely up to you. It may be that you fundraise for us while you're deployed, or you host one of our events in your Mess. Or it could be that you simply display our posters in your place of work to help your colleagues look after their sight.

Our commitment to you

Our champions are supported by our Military and Member Engagement team, who are always on hand to answer your questions. You may wish to publicise what we've achieved together, or invite one of our speakers to support your event to share their inspiring story. All of this can be discussed after registration.

'WWII veterans set the bar'

To mark VE Day 80, we joined forces with The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to witness Sqn Leader Mark Sugden, Officer Commanding of the Flight, perform a flypast in a Hurricane over the Petwood Hotel. In this short video, Mark talks about his admiration for those who made VE Day a reality.
